About Morris Fox - Our Story

Founded by a dad of 2 children with disability.

Craig Shallard is our founder and a director of Morris Fox.

He has lived experience with disability having two children with ASD, both of whom are participants of the NDIS. He is passionate about assisting people with disability and has been a long term advocate for people with disability.

Among many voluntary roles, he has been a board member of AMAZE (Autism Victoria) and a school councillor at his children's special school.

Craig is a CPA and worked for many years in private practice as a tax accountant, but for the past decade Craig worked at the Productivity Commission reporting specifically reporting on the efficiency and effectiveness of disability services provided by the Federal and State Governments as well as assisting with the enquiry into the disability sector which ultimately led to the introduction of the NDIS.

His knowledge and expertise of the NDIS come from both aspects, working and volunteering at both a government and provider level as well as self-managing his children's NDIS plans encompassing everything from planning meetings and dealing with LACs and planners, then review of the plans through to organising service providers and monitoring budgets. He not only works as a plan manager but lives it as well.

In the past year, Craig has had had the privilege of assisting hundreds of people access the NDIS.

NDIS - National Disability Insurance Scheme

The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary support and equipment that a person with disability needs. The funding supports you to:

  • pursue your goals and aspirations
  • increase your independence
  • increase your social and economic participation and
  • develop your capacity to take part in the community

NDIS funding doesn't cover general everyday living expenses that people without disability would be required to pay, such as train travel, rent, groceries, mobile phone or movie tickets.

In order to be considered reasonable and necessary, a support must,

  • be related to your disability
  • represent value for money
  • be likely to be effective and beneficial
  • take into account any informal supports given to you by your family, friends, support crew (including support workers, support networks and the community)
  • can't include any day-to-day living costs that aren't related to your disability support needs.

Funding under the NDIS is individualised, based on goals and outcomes. Your plan is developed following a planning meeting and can be reviewed as your goals change.

Assistance from the NDIS is not means tested and has no impact on income support such as the Disability Support Pension and Carers Allowance.

Your NDIS plan will be individual and specific to you and your life.

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund include:

  • daily personal activities
  • transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities
  • workplace help to allow you to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market
  • therapeutic supports including behaviour support
  • help with household tasks to allow you to maintain your home environment
  • help by skilled personnel in aids or equipment assessment, set up and training
  • home modification design and construction
  • mobility equipment
  • vehicle modifications

The NDIS is rolling out progressively throughout Australia and is expected to be fully rolled out by July 2019.

Find out when the NDIS will be available in your region by selecting your state or territory below:

The NDIS will approve claims for what is deemed a 'reasonable and necessary' support. These are goods or services directly relevant to the participant achieving the specific goals and objectives detailed in their current NDIS plan. The NDIS will be unlikely to approve claims that are not deemed to be related to a participant's disability, such as; items everyone has to pay for like day to day living costs, entertainment, food, support items already delivered under other NDIS funding, items that do not represent value for money, items that may pose a risk of harm to the participant or others, and items already covered by other Government funding such as Medicare etc. More information about reasonable and necessary supports can be found on the NDIS website.

NDIS Plan Meeting

Planning meetings can either be conducted by a NDIA Planner or through a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). A LAC can be a NDIS staff member or they can be a team member of a not-for-profit organisation who is acting on behalf of the NDIA.

You can request a face-to-face meeting planning meeting when the NDIS planner calls you. When someone from the NDIS calls you, ask them what the purpose of the phone call is: ask whether it's to check your eligibility or whether it's for your NDIA Planning meeting.

Yes. You can ask a family member, close friend, your partner or a person who supports you (someone you know and can trust).

It's not necessary to include the cost of the item in your plan. However, you can familiarise yourself with the NDIS Price Guide here.

The NDIS will ask you about what your goals are and what supports you may need, this will help them understand what services and supports you need.

Goals are ideas you have about what you want to do in your life. They can be big or small and cover many parts of your life.

You will be asked about both short term goals and long term goals.

There are many examples of goals that might be relevant to you.

A good place to start is to think about what you'd like to achieve in the next year or two. This can be something simple e.g. 'learning to cook for myself' or 'to make new friends'. Longer term goals could be 'finding a job that's right for me' or 'learn to live more independently'.

We have put together a list of goals that you might find helpful. You can adapt these goals to fit your needs.

You can request a review of your plan with the NDIA (this must be made within three months of receiving your plan). You can make the request by:

  • Calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110
  • Writing to the CEO of the NDIA at GPO Box 700, Canberra ACT 2601
  • Emailing to a request to enquiries@ndis.gov.au
  • Visiting an NDIS office or
  • Completing the application for review of a decision form on the NDIS myplace participant portal.

Your review will be conducted by an NDIA staff member who was not involved in the original decision making. They will reconsider the facts, law and policy aspects of the original plan and determine if it was accurate. They are also able to consider any new information available.

Plan Management - General

Being plan managed means that a NDIS registered plan management provider (such as Morris Fox) takes care of the NDIS funding on the participant's behalf, ensuring timely payment of invoices and other admin. This relieves the stress that can be associated with claiming payments through the NDIS MyPlace Portal and the burden of archiving receipts.

The biggest benefit of being plan managed is that you are able to, the participant can receive supports from service providers who are both registered and not registered with the NDIS.

Plan management is all about supporting your choice and helping you regain capacity. You have the rights to ask for plan management to be included in your plan.

To be plan managed, you must have 'Improved Life Choices' included in your NDIS plan.

For those with an upcoming planning meeting or review, be sure to request Improved Life Choices is included in your plan. This covers all plan management fees so there is no expense to you. If you have a current plan that does not have Improved Life Choices included, but you do wish to be plan managed, you can request a review of your NDIS plan to have plan management included. Be aware, reviews can take some time.

However, if you use only NDIS registered service providers, your next plan might be NDIS managed.

There are few important things for you to remember:

  • Any unspent funds are returned to the NDIA. Because you didn't spend all the money allocated, your new plan might have less funding allocated compared to the current plan.
  • If your current plan is plan managed, but used only NDIS registered service providers, you might lose your plan managed status and the new plan may be NDIS managed. This will result in you losing the ability to select your own service providers in the future.

If you are over 65 at the time your area rolls out the NDIS, you will transition into the aged care system. If you are currently receiving funding under the NDIS and you turn 65, you can either choose to remain with the NDIS or you can transition to the aged care system.

There is no out-of-pocket expense for Morris Fox's fee as long as you have plan management included in your plan called Improved Life Choices. This will cover 100% of our fees. Our fees will always be in line with the NDIS Price Guide so there won't be any surprises.

Yes, you can. NDIS biggest emphasis is on choice and control so you have the choice to decide who gets to be your plan manager. You can also decide to change your plan manager in the middle of the plan. Please contact us and we will work with you through the steps required.

Yes, one of the benefit of using Morris Fox as your plan manager is that you can use your preferred provider, regardless if they are NDIS registered provider or non-registered provider.

For your protection, NDIS requires all providers to have an ABN, including unregistered providers. You can encourage your provider to register for an ABN, it's free and easy to apply for an ABN, for more information go to https://abr.gov.au/For-Business,-Super-funds---Charities/Applying-for-an-ABN/">Australian Business Register
